Just how good are The Subways?
What a great
band.
Just when you
thought that there could be no more twists on this blues rock'n'roll
plot, someone comes along and does something really cool with
it. And they're British. Something homegrown. From Welwyn
Garden City!"
You culd be
glib and say that it's sorta like the White Stripes with a
bass, but that's lazy. Everything about The Subways is great.
Let's start with the drums : the drummer is a fookin' maniac,
he is a ferocious assault, a battery. It's pure raw energy
that drives the blues flavoured rock'n'roll thing, and gawd
do we like a good drummer
Mary-Charlotte
Cooper plays a foxy bass. Strutting the stage with a hyped-up
rock'n'roll confidence, she alternates between a maniac freak
out thing and the sassiest hipswing thing as she hammers down
phat bass on the tunes - when she shimmies up to main vocalist
Billy Lunn it's pure sex, and surely that's what rock'n'roll
is all about.
Lunn is a great
rough-voiced rock of a singer, and he also plays a neat guitar
switching between adrenalised chord rushes and neat lead licks.
Oh, and they have a set full of great songs. A great band
not in the making - a great band already arrived. Fully formed.
The Subways will be big time in 2005.
The best band
of tonight at In The City? Well that's obvious. The Subways
- who are clearly about to blow up - they brought the tunes,
charisma, attitude and energy to the day. Enjoy them now,
soon they will be 'the best new band in the world this week
forever' - hyped to fuck and getting on your nerves.
