We’re quite taken with The Subways to be honest, in
spite of their occasional foray into advanced bluesiness (not
a bad thing in itself, but incredibly difficult to do right,
so fair play to them for walking that particular line quite
as successfully as they do). At heart, though, they’re
a fine swamp-punk affair, ramping up the claustrophobia and
furious glamour in a manner not seen this impressively for
some years now, and it’ll do them no harm that bassist
Charlotte is in no small measure a star-to-be. The first band
to break out of Welwyn Garden City since S*M*A*S*H? You wouldn’t
rule it out.
The sound of
the underground? Oh yes indeed.
